Casa del Drago is a quiet place to eat or drink in Icod de los Vinos, next to the town’s dragon tree. Our hosts recommend it specifically as the break you take after seeing the tree or walking the centre.
The tree it is named after
The Drago Milenario is a Dracaena draco, the Canary Islands dragon tree, and it is the largest and best-known specimen on Tenerife. It is the reason coaches come to Icod.
Its age is genuinely disputed — the name claims a thousand years, and serious estimates run considerably lower, because dragon trees have no growth rings to count. What is not disputed is that it is very old, very large, and unlike any tree most visitors have seen. The red resin it bleeds when cut is where the name comes from.
Why you want somewhere to sit afterwards
The area around the tree is the busiest square metre in Icod. Coach parties arrive, photograph it, and leave. Between arrivals it is fine; during them it is not.
Casa del Drago is the antidote — a calm setting a step away from that, for lunch or a drink, before you either explore the rest of the town or walk back down to San Marcos.
Practicalities
Eight minutes by car from the apartment. Combine it with the supermarkets, since you are already in Icod, or with Casa de Platana if you want the banana story.
