If your stay covers a weekend, the mercado del agricultor is a better shop than any supermarket on this coast, and it is one of the more enjoyable mornings available.
The two worth going to
La Guancha, about fifteen minutes east, runs at weekends and finishes around 2 pm. It sits beside the highway, which makes it easy to find and unromantic to look at — and it is where our hosts go. Produce, island cheese, bread, and a local baker whose cakes get a specific mention in the Welcome Book.
Los Silos, about twenty-five minutes west, runs on Sunday mornings in the central square, also until around 2 pm. Smaller, prettier, and more of a village occasion than a shop.
What to actually buy
Fruit and vegetables grown on these slopes rather than shipped in — the difference in tomatoes alone justifies the trip. Goat cheese, which the island does very well and which barely leaves it. Bread. Honey. And wine direct from growers, often the same people who supply the bodegas.
Bring cash and a bag, and go early. This is not a tourist market with stock held back for the afternoon; when the good things are gone they are gone, and everything shuts firmly at two.
Why it matters for this apartment
The flat has a proper kitchen, and most guests cook in it at least half the time. A Sunday market shop is the thing that turns that from a convenience into a reason to be here — a table of local produce eaten on the balcony beats most restaurant meals on this coast.
