Vielú Pizzería is an Italian restaurant in Icod de los Vinos, about eight minutes up the hill from Playa de San Marcos. It has been open since 2016, the base is thin and crisp rather than Neapolitan, and it does takeaway — which is why it ends up in a lot of our guests’ weeks.
What the pizza is actually like
The house style is a thin, crisp base. That is worth saying plainly, because “best pizza in Tenerife” gets attached to a lot of places and people arrive expecting different things. If you are looking for the soft, wet-centred, leopard-spotted Neapolitan pizza, this is not that. If you like a base with structure and snap, it is very good.
Some of the toppings are their own reading of Italian rather than a strict one — variations on quattro formaggi and the like. Depending on your temperament that is either the appeal or the objection. We think it is the appeal.
Why it matters on a self-catering holiday
There is a practical reason this place features so heavily in our guests’ stays, and it is not purely culinary. When you are renting an apartment with a kitchen, the useful thing is not always another restaurant — it is a good option for the evening when nobody wants to cook and nobody wants to get dressed for dinner.
Collecting a pizza in Icod on the way back from a walk, and eating it on the balcony while the sun goes down over the Atlantic, is a completely normal evening here. It requires no booking, no timing, and no negotiation with anyone’s opening hours.
Getting there
It is on Avenida Príncipe de España in Icod de los Vinos, in the Isla Paraíso building. From the apartment it is a short drive uphill — the walk up from San Marcos is a real climb and not one we would suggest doing hungry.
