Tenerife is one of the best road-cycling destinations in the world, and the reason is simple geography: you can start at the Atlantic and climb continuously to above 2,000 metres without the road ever really going down. Professional teams come here for altitude blocks. The bottom of that climb is where the apartment is.
What makes it exceptional
Most great climbs are ten or twenty kilometres. The ascent of Teide from the north coast is on a different scale — a sustained haul from sea level into the caldera, gaining more than two thousand metres in a single effort, on good tarmac, in weather that allows it all year.
That combination is close to unique, which is why you will pass professional riders in team kit on a Tuesday in February.
Being honest about the difficulty
This is not a ride to attempt casually because you are on holiday and there is a bike available. The altitude is real: by the top you are in air with meaningfully less oxygen, and it affects people who are fit at sea level.
Plan food and water properly — there is very little between the pine forest and the park — and treat the descent as its own event. It is long, fast and considerably colder than the climb.
Hiring a bike
Our hosts recommend Rennrad Vermietung in Puerto de la Cruz, about twenty-five minutes east. They hire proper road bikes and, more usefully, give route advice from people who ride here.
If you would rather not climb it
You can drive the same road and see the same landscape in an hour — see Teide National Park. The view from the caldera floor is identical whether you earned it or not.
